History of the KIA brand

The South Korean automobile company Kia began its activity in 1944 with the release of bicycles. In 1957, the company masters the production of scooters. The production of motorcycles and three-wheeled trucks starts three years later. In 1971, with an increase in output, the company is transformed into KIA Corp. In 1976, Kia buys Asia Motors and starts producing cars, trucks and vans. After the financial crisis in the early 80s, KIA produced a cheap Pride car based on the Mazda 121. After the financial situation stabilized, KIA entered the European car market in the early 90s.

In 1990, the company receives a new name – KIA Motors Corp. The company deserves international recognition and opens new production facilities in Japan and the United States. On the basis of the Mazda 626 model, in 1995, the KIA Clarus car was created with good aerodynamic characteristics.

In the same year, the KIA Sephia came out in hatchback and sedan bodies. In 1996, with the participation of the developers of the German company Karmann, the KIA Sportage SUV was born, which, at a reasonable price, has good driving characteristics. In 1997, the KMS-II roadster rolled off the assembly line, the body of which was made of composite material. The basis for the roadster was the car Lotus Elan. In the same year, the KIA-Baltika plant was opened in Kaliningrad, Russia, where the assembly of brand cars began.

In 1998, KIA Motors Corp was taken over by Hyundai due to heavy losses. Currently, KIA cars are mastering the roads in more than 170 countries around the world.
