History of the Changan brand

The history of the Chinese car company Changan Automobile dates back to 1986, when the Chang an Machinery plant was built in the town of Chongqing. After the 1949 revolution, the firm passed into state ownership. After 10 years, the production of army SUVs was launched at the Changan plant, and in 1983 the Chinese company organized a joint venture with Japanese partners Suzuki.

After the corporatization carried out in 1995, a group of factories in Chongqing merged into the Changan Automobile Group. The production of passenger cars Suzuki Alto of the 1982 generation, Swift of 1992, as well as compact minivans based on the Suzuki Carry, was launched.

In 2001, Changan Automobile organized an enterprise with auto giants Ford Motors and Mazda, and already in 2002, an automotive engineering institute was created – the Center for Development and Innovation, thanks to which the Chinese company managed to build the first hybrid car in China.
