History of the Jeep brand

The history of Jeep, the legendary American SUV brand, begins in 1938, when the US Army commissioned Willys Overland to create a universal vehicle that could replace the sidecars used at that time. The name “Jeep” comes from the English “general purpose” (GP), which means “general purpose”. The birth date of Jeep is July 23, 1941, when the first Willys MB SUVs were created.

During the Second World War, due to their versatility and high reliability, Willys MB all-terrain vehicles found a wide field of activity. During the war years, more than 600 thousand utility SUVs were produced. The first car, which was labeled as a Jeep, was released in 1944 – it was the Jeep CJ (the abbreviation CJ meant “Civilian Jeep” or “Civilian Jeep”).

In 1948, the Jeepster phaeton rolled off the assembly line, the model received two doors and a four-cylinder engine. In 1949, the station wagon was produced, which became the predecessor of the Jeep Cherokee, it was equipped with a six-cylinder engine. The Jeep trademark receives international registration in 1950. In 1955, the Jeep CJ-5 rolled off the assembly line, which had a more streamlined body shape, this model was very popular in the USA. In 1962, Willys Motors receives a new name – Kaiser Jeep. In 1963, the first car with two leading axles and an automatic transmission was developed. In 1970, Kaiser Jeep comes under the control of American Motors Corporation.

This greatly revitalized the development of new Jeep models and boosted production growth. In 1974, the company released the legendary Cherokee, which was a huge success in the North American market. In 1987, the Wrangler rolled off the Jeep assembly line, a model with improved driving performance and increased comfort.

At the 1992 Detroit Motor Show, the company introduced the Grand Cherokee, a legendary SUV that outperformed many of its competitors in terms of performance, comfort and off-road capabilities. In 2006, the Jeep Commander appeared, created on the Grand Cherokee platform and having seven seats. The advanced transmission Quadra-Drive II, installed on the Jeep Commander, allows you to transfer torque automatically to the front or rear axle of the car. The new Jeep Wrangler rolls off the assembly line in 2007 and is offered in classic 3-door or larger 5-door versions.

In 2008, the new Jeep Cherokee with petrol and diesel engines is released. A year later, part of the shares of Chrysler, which owns Jeep, is acquired by the Italian concern FIAT. As part of the Geneva Motor Show 2014, Jeep introduced the new Renegade model, created on the FIAT 500L platform.
