History of the Maserati brand

The Italian automobile company Maserati was founded by the Maserati brothers in 1914. In total, six brothers took part in the work of the firm. The company was named “Officine Alfieri Maserati”. Initially, the company specialized in the production of cars, engines for them and spark plugs and was located in the Italian city of Bologna.

The recognition of the company occurred in 1926, when Alfieri Maserati piloted the production model Maserati Gran Prix 1500, on the hood of which was installed a trident, which became the emblem of the company. In 1929, the Maserati Tipo V4, driven by driver Bakonin Borzacchini, sets a speed record of 246 km/h.

The younger Maserati – Ernesto in 1933 for the first time in Europe installs a hydraulic brake booster on his racing cars. In 1954, the Maserati 250F wins the first prize in Formula 1 in Argentina. In 1957, Fangio becomes the world champion on the Maserati 250F, and since that time, Maserati has switched to the production of serial road cars. In 1963, the Sebring car was born, which had an engine capacity of 3.7 and 4.0 liters and an aggressive body. In 1963, luxury sedans Mistral and Quattroporte appear, the latter becoming the representative brand of the company.

The Ghibli coupe, shown in 1966, was a breakthrough for its time. The year 1968 brought many changes – Maserati was sold to the French automaker Citroen. Both companies successfully exchanged experience in the development of new vehicles. For example, Maserati borrowed hydraulic suspension technology from Citroen. The oil crisis in 1976 had a negative impact on the sports car market, and low sales forced Maserati to file for bankruptcy.

After the purchase of Maserati by the Italian company Fiat Auto SpA in 1993, the Quattroporte IV Evoluzione debuted. Cars of this model are assembled by hand and are of excellent workmanship. The cars get independent suspension and disc brakes with ABS. The interior of the cars is distinguished by luxurious design – leather, valuable natural wood, excellent audio system. In 1997, Maserati was taken over by Ferrari.

After the modernization of production facilities in the autumn of 1998, the Maserati 3200 GT is born. In 2002, the updated Spyder GT saw the light of day. Two years later, the Italian company launches a new generation of Quattroporte premium sedan. In 2007, one of the most beautiful cars of the brand, the Maserati GranTurismo, was born. The company releases its first Levante crossover in 2016.
