History of the Renault brand

Renault is the largest French automobile corporation, headquartered in Boulogne-Billancourt (a suburb of Paris). In 1898, engineer Louis Renault assembled a small self-propelled wagon in the French city of Villacourt. In 1899, with his brother Marcel, he organized the Renault Brothers company and began producing two-seat cars, which were equipped with a De Dion Buton engine with one cylinder and an original gearbox with moving gears.

In 1905, a taxi car appeared, to which a monument was erected, since 5,000 soldiers of the French army were successfully transferred to the Marne River during the First World War on these machines. In 1906, the company shows its first bus in Berlin. In 1908, at an exhibition in Moscow, the Renault car was awarded a gold medal.

In 1972, the Renault 5 model rolled off the assembly line. Renault won its first victory in the Formula 1 racing competition in 1980. In 1983, Renault produces more than two million cars a year. In 1984, the Renault 25 and Renault Super 5 models go on sale. In 1991, the Renault Clio compact hatchback receives the title of “Car of the Year” in the European market. In 1994, the popular Laguna model was developed. In 1999, Renault signs an agreement with the Japanese company Nissan, as a result of which the French company acquired a 36.8% stake in Nissan in exchange for 15% of its assets.
