History of the Rolls Royce brand

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd is an English automobile company, a subsidiary of the Bavarian concern BMW AG. The company was founded in 1904 by entrepreneur Charles Rolls and engineer Henry Royce. This is where the name of the company comes from, as well as its logo in the form of intertwined two letters R. The first Rolls-Royce car was made in the English city of Manchester in November 1904.

From 1904 to 1906, the company produces models 12PS, 15PS, 20PS, 30PS, which differed in small dimensions. In 1906, the Rolls-Royce 20 PS wins the Tourist Trophy race. In the same year, the Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP was born, which received the name “Silver Ghost” and provided Rolls-Royce with genuine fame. In the future, there are models with similar names Silver Wraith (Silver Ghost), Silver Dawn (Silver Dawn), Silver Cloud (Silver Cloud) and Silver Shadow (Silver Shadow).

In the 50s, Rolls-Royce began to supply its cars to the royal family of England and the aristocratic houses of the world. In 1971, a luxury convertible Rolls-Royce Corniche was developed, which was produced until 1995. In 1977, the auto world got acquainted with the four-door Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith II, which was shown at an exhibition in Geneva. The limousine was equipped with an eight-cylinder engine and had a load-bearing body. In 1998, the leadership of the famous British concern Vickers, which owned Rolls-Royce, decided to sell the famous car company. BMW became a potential buyer, offering £340 million.

But Volkswagen surpassed this figure with an impressive 430 million. Ultimately, the German concern received from Vickers all rights to use many recognizable Rolls-Royce elements, including all documentation and factories. However, the most important thing – the British company retained the trademark and logo, reselling them later to BMW, with which they had a close partnership.

In 2003, Rolls-Royce comes under the full control of BMW. The Volkswagen concern, in the course of the struggle for the brand, received the company’s car factories in Crewe and the subsidiary of Rolls-Royce – Bentley Motors. The first car of the British company after the takeover of BMW was the flagship Phantom. In 2006, in Detroit, USA, the company presents the Phantom Drophead Coupe convertible, which was the most luxurious and expensive in the world. In 2008, in Geneva, the public gets acquainted with the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe – the most luxurious coupe in the world.

The body of the car is made mainly of aluminum alloys, the V8 engine develops 453 hp. In 2009, the company introduced its new Ghost sedan (“Ghost”), built on the BMW F01 rear-wheel drive platform. All Rolls-Royce cars go 2,000 kilometers before being dismantled. Many parts and assemblies are carefully checked, the body of the car is painted, and the car is reassembled.
