History of the MG brand

The founder of the English automobile company MG, William Morris, was engaged in the trade in cars at the beginning of the 20th century. His dealership in Oxford was called “Morris Garage”, hence the firm’s name. But first, in 1913, the first car under the Morris brand was created. After the First World War, “blunt-nosed” Morris Cars were in great demand in England.

Popular were the Cowleys car, whose engine had a volume of 1.5 liters, and the more powerful Oxford with a 14 hp engine. The chief engineer of the company, Sessil Kimber, having certain design abilities, decided to produce new types of cars based on Morris Cars.

In 1927, the MG Midget car was born, which became the most common car in the UK at that time. The four-seater MG Midget had a 14 hp engine, which allowed the car to accelerate to 80 km / h and make the car competitive. In 1928, the MG 18/80 model went on sale, which received a six-cylinder engine with a volume of 2.5 liters. The MG 18/80 did not receive significant sales due to the high price. In the early 1950s, MG merged with Austin. The resulting formation of the British Motor Company produces MG B, MG A, MG B GT cars. The new model MG Midget and MG Magnette III became especially popular. In 1982, the British Leyland Corporation launched the MG Metro subcompact car, the MG Montego compact sedan and the MG Maestro hatchback. In England, these cars have received sufficient popularity.

In 2005, MG is bought by Nanjing Automobile from the Celestial Empire, which has been producing modernized MG cars since 2007 for the British and Chinese markets.
