History of the Polaris brand

Polaris Industries is an American manufacturer of snowmobiles, ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle, all-terrain vehicle) and electric vehicles. Polaris is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.

The history of Polaris ATVs begins in 1954 when Orlen Johnson, David Johnson and Paul Nochenmus built their first snowmobile. With his appearance, the dynamic development of Polaris in the field of motorcycles began. The first samples of ATVs and snowmobiles, which is quite natural, were quite primitive and from a stylistic point of view they cannot be compared with modern models, but already at that time they could be used in harsh climatic conditions, due to which they began to be in great demand.

The prototypes of the ATV four-wheeled all-terrain vehicles now on the market are the ATC tricycles – All-Terrain Cycles – “off-road” motorcycles of the Japanese concern Honda, produced since the late 60s. Despite the relative conventionality of their off-road ability, they feel good outside the asphalt, allowing not only to ride on dirt and sand, but also to overcome obstacles in the form of not too deep mud or snow. Over time, the three-wheel layout began to give way to the four-wheel layout, and for some time motorcycle manufacturers from Japan, Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha, also played the leading roles here.

That all changed in 1985, when Polaris Industries made a breakthrough with the launch of the first four-wheeled ATV in the United States of America, Polaris Trail Boss, which was pioneered by the use of such technical solutions as: Polaris Variable Transmission (PVT) continuously variable automatic transmission, independent MacPherson type front suspension, long travel rear suspension and disc brakes on both axles.

With the advent of this model, there was a noticeable revival in the ATV market. Almost everyone who had an idea about ATV dreamed of becoming owners of the Trail Boss ATV, which for a long time was considered the standard in the class of four-wheeled ATVs. Among the manufacturers of motorcycles, competition began to grow, everyone tried to offer consumers something new, something that others do not have. But none of the Japanese brands mentioned above, nor the Arctic Cat and Can-Am brands (BRP, Bombardier Recreational Product) that appeared in the 90s, managed to take the palm in the field of motorcycles from Polaris.

From year to year, Polaris specialists improve their models – their technical parameters and appearance. The most serious attention is paid to safety, for which ATVs undergo numerous tests and are constantly being improved.

In 1987, Polaris introduced the first all-wheel-drive system, AWD Polaris, to Polaris ATVs, which automatically switches between 2WD and 4WD depending on the required traction. At the same time, other manufacturers are equipping their ATVs with a self-locking differential that can only lock three wheels.

In 1996, the Polaris Sportsman debuted IRS independent rear suspension, minimizing body roll for a level of comfort never seen before.

Unique technical solutions, combined with a strong frame and the highest reliability of all elements, allowed the Sportsman ATV to become a world bestseller in the ATV class. In 2008, Polaris reported the one millionth Sportsman ATV sold.

In 2006, Polaris begins selling a mid-size ATV equipped with the aforementioned IRS independent suspension, and a year later, the first models with a rear seat with transformation capabilities appear on the market.

The year 2011 marked the premiere of new innovations for Polaris, most of which were embodied in the Sportsman XP EPS 850 EFI ATV, equipped with a 75-horsepower 0.85-liter gasoline engine. The new Polaris Sportsman XP has a payload capacity of 160 kilograms and a towing capacity of 680 kilograms, which is the highest in the class.

The EPS abbreviation in the model name indicates that it is equipped with an electric power steering with damper, and EFI indicates the presence of an electronic fuel injection system on a high-performance two-cylinder four-stroke engine. Among other things, the Sportsman XP EPS 850 EFI is equipped with ADC and EBS systems – the first controls the movement of the ATV during its descent, and the second allows you to effectively brake the engine. The rear suspension is IRS independent, while the front uses double A-arms, the longest in production today, providing 23 centimeters of wheel travel.

With the highest ground clearance of an ATV of 30.5 centimeters, the Polaris Sportsman XP has uncommon off-road capabilities, surpassing all its competitors in this parameter.
