History of the Volvo brand

Volvo Cars is a large Swedish manufacturer of cars and commercial vehicles, headquartered in Gothenburg in the southwest of the country. The history of the company begins in the distant 1915, when the SKF bearing manufacturing enterprise was founded. Volvo is founded in 1927 as a subsidiary of SKF. Translated into Russian, Volvo means “I’m rolling.”

At the same time, the first car of the Volvo brand – OV4 – was released. In 1935, Volvo gains independence from its parent company and begins developing new models. In 1944, the production car PV 444 was released, which is shown in Stockholm at the Royal Tennis Hall. In the same year, the company produces the PV60 diesel bus. The Volvo Duett station wagon appears in 1953. With this car, Volvo begins to focus on the production of family-type cars. In 1954, Volvo announces a five-year warranty on its cars.

Since 1955, Volvo has been supplying its products to the United States. The introduction of the P 120 in 1956, known in the Scandinavian countries as the Amazon, surprised the world, as this model had a pronounced feminine outline. In 1958, the Volvo PV 544 wins first prize in the European Rally Championship. In 1959, engineer Niels Bohlen creates a three-point seat belt, and Volvo is the first to install these belts in production cars.

Designed in 1966, the Volvo 144 wins Car of the Year for its advanced safety systems. In 1967, the first child seat was developed and installed in a car. In 1975, Volvo becomes the owner of DAF and starts selling models of this brand under its own logo. In the same year, a family of passenger cars of the 200th series appeared, more than 2.8 million of these cars were sold in the world. In 1982, the Swedish company released the Volvo 760 business sedan, which became one of the safest in the world.

In 1990, Volvo launches its flagship model with the index 960. In 1995, compact cars Volvo S40 and Volvo V40 go on sale. In 1997, the all-terrain travel model Volvo V70 Cross Country is born. In 1999, Ford Motor Company acquires Volvo Cars. Under the wing of Ford, Volvo is modernizing its model range, sales of brand cars are gradually starting to go up.

In 2000, the sporty Volvo S60 was developed, which was very popular in the United States. The Swedish company released its first SUV in 2002 – the Volvo XC90, which received wide commercial success.
