History of the Dodge brand

In 1914, the brothers John and Horace Dodge (John and Horace Dodge) from Michigan founded the Dodge Brothers Incorporated automobile company, which later became one of the most famous in the United States. In the same year, the public got acquainted with the first-born of the company – the Old Betsy convertible. This car had an electric starter, headlights and developed a power of 35 hp. In 1915, the company produced about 45 thousand cars, but demand exceeded supply. In 1917, the Dodge company produces an ambulance for the army and from this year begins the production of trucks and vans. By 1920, Dodge Brothers Incorporated successfully sold more than 141,000 vehicles on the market.

For the first time in the world in 1921, a car with a closed metal body was produced – the Dodge Tourung Car. In 1922, the company begins to produce cars in London, becoming the first American company to enter the European market. In Europe, Dodge trucks were called Graham. In 1924, a two-seater Dodge Roadster coupe appears, from which the company’s sporting success begins.

In 1928 Chrysler buys Dodge Brothers Incorporated. In 1932, the Dodge DL series appeared – a convertible with a ram figurine decoration. From that moment on, the ram became the emblem of Dodge. In honor of the 25th anniversary of the company in 1939, all car models were restyled. In the post-war years, the company concentrated on the production of civilian equipment. In 1966, the Charger sports coupe appeared, and 4 years later the legendary Challenger 2-door “muscle car” debuted – a cult model with which Dodge strengthens its position in this segment. In the late 70s, the Chrysler concern found itself in a difficult financial situation, but thanks to government subsidies, the company managed to avoid bankruptcy.

To overcome the crisis, new Aries and Caravan models were released under the Dodge brand, designed to increase sales of the company’s cars.

In the 90s, Dodge releases the Dodge Dakota convertible pickup truck, the roof of this car is made of soft material. Launch of the Quad Cab model, with hinged rear doors for the first time. In 1992, the company demonstrated to the public the cult supercar Viper (“Viper”) – this car became a competitor to the Chevrolet Corvette. In 2006, the Dodge Caliber crossover was presented in Geneva – later sales of this model started in Russia.

The Dodge Nitro SUV, which has good dynamic characteristics, was released in 2007. In 2008, the company shows the Dodge Journey family model, the interior of which can be easily transformed. Since 2014, Dodge has been part of the FIAT-Chrysler Automobiles NV alliance.
