History of the FIAT brand

The Italian automobile company FIAT (Societa Anonima Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino – a joint stock company of an automobile plant in Turin) was established back in 1899. The firstborn of the company – the Corso Dante 35 car had a two-cylinder engine with a power of 3.5 hp. In 1903, the first Fiat truck appeared. In 1904, the model “75 PS” brings sports glory to the company.

Rolling off the assembly line in 1912, the Zero model begins to be in great demand. In 1925, the FIAT 509 car rolled off the assembly line, the engine of which had a camshaft at the top. The model turned out to be quite cheap and in 1925-1929 the company produced 90,000 of these cars.

In 1950, a completely new FIAT 1400 model was born, on which a diesel engine was installed for the first time. Since 1951, when the FIAT 1900 model was created, a designation system related to engine size has been introduced. In 1952, the production of the V8 sports model, the first FIAT car with independent suspension of all wheels, was launched in small series. The affordable “600” model appears in 1955 and brings additional fame to the company. Subcompact car Nuova-500 is released in 1957. This model for 15 years is produced by the company in the amount of 3 million.

In 1973, the double model X 1/9 goes on sale. Panda subcompact car with an angular exterior rolls off the assembly line in 1980. In January 1983, FIAT shows the Uno. In 1984, the Regata sedan was developed on the basis of the Ritmo model. The collaboration between Fiat and Lancia and SAAB resulted in the creation of the Croma sedan, whose engines were turbocharged. In 1980-90, the image of the Italian company is rapidly declining – the reason for this was problems with the reliability of FIAT cars. In the late 1990s, the company began to suffer losses.

The situation is changing gradually with the development of new models – in 2005, FIAT for the first time in a long time becomes profitable. In 2014, the Italian firm acquired a majority stake in Chrysler. The company is currently focused on the production of passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
