History of the Volkswagen brand

The world’s largest German automotive concern Volkswagen AG specializes in the production of cars, trucks and minibuses. The headquarters is located in Wolfsburg. The history of the company began in 1934, when the famous German engineer Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned by the then German government to create a modern passenger car that was affordable and easy to operate. In 1936, Ferdinand Porsche demonstrates the first prototypes in the form of a 2-door coupe, a convertible (by order of the Fuhrer) and a 4-door model.

Two years later, Volkswagenwerk GmbH was founded, at the same time the construction of a plant near Fallersleben in northern Germany began. Especially for the employees of the enterprise, a small town was built – Wolfsburg, which later became a major industrial center. The name of the Volkswagen brand is formed from two words: volks – people, wagen – car. In 1938, the first production model of the VW Typ 82 concern was produced, which received the popular name “Beetle” (Kafer), since outwardly it resembled this insect.

After the war, Volkswagen comes under the control of England. In 1947, Holland asks Volkswagen to produce 1,000 cars. A year later, contracts for the supply of machines are concluded with Switzerland, Belgium and other European countries. The company is gradually increasing production volumes, out of 50 thousand cars assembled in 1948, only 15 thousand remain on the domestic market – the rest are exported.

1949 Volkswagens are produced in cabriolet and limousine bodies. At the same time, the enterprise got out of control of the British and transferred to the Republic of Germany. In August 1955, the company celebrates the release of the millionth Volkswagen car. In 1955, the sports Karmann-Ghia rolled off the assembly line.

In 1961, the Volkswagen-1500 sedan was created, the engine of which received an increased volume. After joining the company NSU, Volkswagen in 1969 releases its first front-wheel drive model. In 1970, the VW-181 model with an open body came out of the gates of the company, on the basis of which the lltis army vehicle was developed in 1979. Released in 1973, Passat (B1) marked a new stage in the development of the German company.

In 1974, the popular Golf I model was created, which marked the beginning of the era of cars of the so-called “Golf class”. The Jetta four-door sedan is developed from the Golf and goes on sale in 1980. In 1995, the company released a comfortable family minivan Sharan in 5- and 7-seater versions.

The first modern SUV of the German company was the Volkswagen Touareg, released in 2002. In 2004, sales of the third generation of the commercial family of Caddy cars started, which were widely recognized in the world due to their excellent performance. In 2008, the company revived the production of the Scirocco sports image car, the first generation of which was shown back in 1974. Two years later, the assembly of Amarok pickups began.
